Buying Back

the Planet

Buying Back the Planet brings land into collective ownership across Europe.

We make it accessible to the farmers and communities who steward it sustainably, passing it on to future generations.

Buying Back the Planet is based in The Netherlands and planning to work across Europe. We’re now in the founding stage, and we are actively looking for fellow changemakers working on climate action, regenerative agriculture and land stewardship.

The challenge

Nature in Europe is

under pressure.

Buying Back the Planet - bijgesneden

Climate change, unsustainable agriculture, urbanisation, and pollution are pushing European ecosystems to the edge. We lose the equivalent of 600 football pitches of green spaces to construction every single day. Europe is the fastest warming continent on Earth, and land use is at the centre of the problem.

Meanwhile, land ownership is a deciding factor for land use. Farmers who want to transition to regenerative practices are priced out of the market. Young people starting food forests or community farms can’t get access. Land, the ground under our feet, is used for profit and speculation.

By purchasing land collectively, we can determine what happens to it. Collective land ownership is a proven model for long-term land stewardship. We ensure it’s managed sustainably and handed on rather than depleted.

Land, justice, and The Hague

Buying Back the Planet is proudly based in The Hague, The Netherlands. During ChangeNOW 2026, we’ll be visible on digital screens in metro stations and major train hubs throughout the city, featuring impact founders from The Hague.

Land ownership is directly linked with climate justice, and therefore with The Hague as the international city of peace and justice. Just land stewardship means that those who live and work on the land have a real say in how it is managed. It means caring for land not as an asset to be extracted, but as a commons to be passed on.

Buying Back the Planet puts these principles into practice. By acquiring land collectively and placing it under long term stewardship, we shift power back to the people who care for it. We cannot take adequate climate action without the just involvement of land stewards and local communities, and we cannot achieve climate justice without addressing who owns and controls the land beneath our feet.

WHO’S BEHIND THIS

Built by people who

believe in real action.

Landschap bijgesneden

Buying Back the Planet is being founded by Paulien Boone, alongside a growing team of contributors. Together they are working to establish the right setup for Buying Back the Planet to contribute to the growth of collective land ownership across Europe.

As the team says: “The world calls for real action, for living soil, clean water and a healthy atmosphere. Buying Back the Planet exists to take that action.”

We are currently in the founding phase, working alongside others who share this conviction. Partners, funders, and collaborators are warmly welcomed.
